WAIKOLOA — If Trevor Hirata felt like he left any shots on the course in the BIIF golf opener last week, he more than made up for it at Waikoloa Kings Course on Wednesday.
The two-time defending BIIF champ out of Waiakea fired 3-under 69 at the second BIIF meet of the season, besting teammate Shon Katahira (72) by three strokes.
Hirata shot 35 on the front, and rolled into the clubhouse with a 34 on the back nine. Katahira started slower with a 38 on the front, but matched Hirata with a 34 on the back.
Katahira had the low (68) last week at Volcano Country Club, while Hirata carded a 76.
Kamehameha’s Kalai Pomroy remained steady with a 73, while teammate Preston Ching was the only other golfer (76) to card a round in the 70s.
After falling to Kamehameha last week in the team competition, Waiakea bounced back to win on Wednesday with a 306 team total, led by Hirata and Katahira’s performances.
Jillian Mitsuda turned in the best round among the girls. The Waiakea standout shot a 80 to outpace teammate and defending BIIF champion Kaley Saludares (82). Rounding out the Warrior trio atop the leaderboard — which handily gave Waiakea the team title at the meet 245-298 over Hilo — was Annie Nakamoto with an 83.
The next BIIF meet is March 29 at Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
